Brikena, originally from Albania, arrived in England in 2022 at the age of 15. Her journey began with a long car ride, where she went to go and live with her new foster carers, this marked a significant change in her life. Like other young people who are care experienced, Brikena has been dealt with many unexpected challenges, yet her story is also filled with growth and hope.
When Brikena arrived in England, she was unable to speak much English, but with her own determination and the continued support of her foster carers and social worker, Brikena pushed through. Now 18, she has been here for over 2 years and has made significant progress. “I’m very proud of how far I’ve come,” she said. Despite the challenges of learning a new language, Brikena has made impressive academic achievements! “Last year I finished college and did my functional skills,” she shared. This year, she’s setting her sights even higher. “I am doing a health and social course, which I am excited about.”
Brikena’s foster carers made her really feel at home. “They made me feel like I was actually part of their family,” she said. Brikena spoke of one of her favourite moments that really stuck with her: “It was my birthday a couple of days after I moved in, and I thought, ‘I have no one to celebrate with.’ But they surprised me with a nice meal and made it extra special for me.” Brikena’s social worker also played a big role in giving her the correct support, with Brikena expressing her appreciation and describing her social worker as ‘amazing’.
These small acts of kindness can leave a long-lasting impact on many young people. This is proof that even in the most difficult circumstances, the love and support that foster carers and others show, can help a young person feel loved, happy and seen. As a foster carer, you would be helping a young person like Brikena, reach their potential.
As Brikena transitioned into adulthood, she found herself living independently, a big step for many care leavers. “I need to be thankful for that,” she said. “One thing I’m happy about is not having to share with people!” While she enjoys the freedom that comes with living on her own, she also acknowledged the challenges she has already faced. “I have continued support from my Personal Advisor and my previous foster carers” she said. “But I am living by myself, so I do things independently, but sometimes it can be hard.”
Living independently is a huge milestone for many care leavers, it can be a very empowering experience. However, the freedom of living on your own can come with a lot of responsibilities:
- Managing finances
- Keeping up with household tasks
- Emotional wellbeing
- Employment and education
Managing these at first can be very overwhelming for young people, especially without the correct support. As a foster carer, offering your support during this transition can make all the difference. Your role could be crucial in helping care leavers build the confidence and skills needed to thrive on their own.
