The Power Of Relationships
Foster Care Fortnight 2025 (12-25 May), the annual campaign run by the UK’s leading fostering charity The Fostering Network, is currently upon us. This year’s theme, The Power of Relationships, reflects deeply with Foster Birmingham’s mission, making it a time to highlight the meaningful connections that make fostering such a life changing experience, for both carers and the children they support.
Why Foster Care Fortnight 2025 Matters
Fostering is supported by a wide network of dedicated people. Behind every child and young person is a team of people working together and playing a vital part in that child’s life. This reflects on The Power of Relationships and reminds us how each connection is important in creating stable, safe and loving homes.
Foster Carers open their hearts and provide stable, loving homes that children and young people can flourish in. They embrace the challenges and continue to be an important role model for young people in their care.
Social Workers are a consistent presence, providing guidance, advocating for the child’s best interests, and supporting both the child and their foster family through each step of the care journey.
“It’s about adults working collaboratively and respecting each other and the child” – Betul, Foster Carer
Supervising Social Workers are there for our foster carers. They provide training, practical advice, and one-to-one sessions ensuring foster carers feel confident and never alone in what can be a challenging journey.
Teachers can be a constant in a young person’s life, helping children reach their potential, build in confidence and create a positive learning experience, which can eventually reflect in their home life.
“There were staff at school who knew how to respond differently – they gave them space to calm down and helped them settle” – Andrew, Foster Carer
Mental Health Professionals help young people to process their experiences and emotions. Their support is vital in helping children build resilience, understand their story’s better, and develop healthy coping strategies for the future.
Advocacy – For young people who have struggled to find those strong relationships, advocacy becomes crucial. That’s why the Rights and Participation Advocacy Service provides support to Birmingham Children in Care, Care Leavers and young people subject to a Child Protection Plan. Ensuring that every voice is heard, and every right protected, helping young people to know they are not alone.
“My advocate helped me understand what my meeting was about. I was able to share my views for the meeting. It’s the first time it felt like someone is listening to me and making sure I was being listened to by others.” – Young Person
