Teenage and Remand Foster Carers play an important role at Birmingham Children’s Trust. Providing a short-term home for young people awaiting their trial or sentencing and helping them along their journey. Whilst we understand the role seems challenging, the impact you could have on a young person can help shape their future for the better.
To successfully take on the role of a Teenage and Remand Foster Carer, it is important to meet the following criteria:
- Resilience, being active, can think outside the box, and committed to achieving good outcomes for young people.
- Have experience of working with children & young people i.e. residential, youth work
- Drive and have access to a car to escort young people to and from school.
- Be available to foster on approval.
- Committed to training and developing skills and expertise
As a Remand Foster Carer, you would become the advocate for the young person in your care. Making sure that their voice is heard, and they are seen. This helps rebuild trust that the young person may be struggling with, you have the opportunity of improving better communication and positive change for the young person.
Paulette Hunte, Assistant Head of Service for Fostering, has shared this important message:
“Custody can be a damaging experience for some of our most vulnerable young people. We urgently need Remand Foster Carers to provide that critical support and a home for alleged young offenders from the age of 10 -17, whilst they are awaiting trial or sentencing. You can make a real difference by offering a supportive environment to enable young people to reflect on their actions and behaviour and ultimately secure a safer, and brighter future. As with our other specialist schemes you will receive an enhanced fostering fee and additional training and wrap around support to ensure you feel confident in your role.”
