A Powerful Night at The Mockingbird Cinema
Last Thursday, we hosted the premiere of The Run, a powerful new short film, at The Mockingbird Cinema. The event brought together local businesses, community organisations, and media representatives for an evening that was both moving and motivating – all centred around one urgent message: Birmingham needs more foster carers.
The film tells the story of Tom, an 11-year-old boy running from chaos, hunger, and fear – until he finds something worth running toward: hope, stability, and a future.
A National Campaign with Local Roots
The Run is part of a national campaign, funded and supported by over 90 local authorities across the UK. What began as a small Midlands project has grown into a collective effort to raise awareness and recruit more foster carers – because children like Tom are everywhere, and they all deserve a chance.
Tom’s journey, brought to life through stunning visuals and emotional storytelling, culminates in a powerful stadium scene where his talent for athletics becomes a symbol of resilience and possibility. It’s a story that resonates deeply, reminding us that behind every child in care is untapped potential waiting to be nurtured.
A Heartfelt Plea from Birmingham Children’s Trust
“This film is more than a call to action – it’s a heartfelt plea,” said Tracy Collins, Assistant Director for Commissioning and Specialist Services at Birmingham Children’s Trust.
“Right now, in Birmingham and across the country, children are waiting for someone who can provide stability, love and the chance to thrive. Please don’t rule yourself out – we need people from all walks of life to step forward. Fostering isn’t about being perfect – it’s about being present.”
Launching the Foster Birmingham Community Champions
The evening also marked the launch of the Foster Birmingham Community Champions initiative – a new way for local businesses and organisations to support fostering through HR policies, outreach, and networks. Attendees learned how they can help build a city where every child has the opportunity to thrive, whether by becoming a foster carer or simply by championing the cause in their workplace and community.
With fostering services under increasing pressure and more children in need of safe, stable homes, The Run is a timely reminder that fostering is a shared responsibility – and that even the smallest act of support can change a child’s life.
