This Is Fostering (But Not the Version You Expect)

At 7:42am, someone is packing a lunchbox for a child who still isn’t sure this is home.

By 3:15pm, someone is waiting by the school gates, knowing that today might be a “good day”… or not.

Later, at 9:03pm, someone is sitting at the end of a bed, answering big questions with patience, honesty and care.

This is fostering.

Not the version you see in headlines or headlines you scroll past, but the real, everyday moments that quietly change a child’s life.

Foster Care Fortnight 2026: Let’s Be Honest About What Fostering Really Is

Foster Care Fortnight (11 – 24 May 2026), led by The Fostering Network, is the UK’s biggest annual campaign to raise awareness of fostering and celebrate the people who make it possible.

This year’s theme, “This Is Fostering,” invites us to move beyond stereotypes and show fostering as it really happens. It’s not perfect, and it’s not always easy, but it is incredibly powerful.

Because fostering isn’t one big heroic act, instead it’s hundreds of small, consistent ones.

It’s:

  • Showing up when it matters
  • Staying calm when things feel anything but
  • Celebrating progress that others might not even notice

And over time, those moments build something extraordinary: trust.

It Takes a Village (And In Birmingham, That Village Is Strong)

No foster carer does this alone, and they shouldn’t have to.

Behind every fostering journey is a network of people who make it possible:

  • Foster carers creating stability, belonging and warmth in their homes
  • Social workers guiding, protecting and advocating for children
  • Supervising social workers cheering on carers and helping them navigate challenges
  • Teachers who bring consistency and encouragement every school day
  • Health and wellbeing professionals supporting children to process, heal and grow

Together, they create something bigger than any one person could: a system of care that gives children the chance to thrive.

Why This Matters Right Now

Because across Birmingham, there are children who need somewhere safe to live.

Not just a house, but a home.

Not just care, but connection.

And right now, there aren’t enough foster carers to meet that need.

Could This Be You?

You don’t need to be perfect or have all the answers. You just need:

  • A spare bedroom
  • Patience in your approach
  • The willingness to make a difference, one day at a time

At Foster Birmingham, you’ll never be left to figure it out alone. We offer:

  • Support 24/7, 365 days a year
  • Ongoing training to build your confidence
  • Competitive financial support
  • A community that celebrates you every step of the way

This Is Fostering. And It Could Start With You.
